French legislators are expected to pass a measure on Monday that would make France the first country in the world to explicitly enshrine access to abortion in its Constitution. The constitutional amendment requires three-fifths approval of gathered lawmakers from both houses of Parliament to pass. The amendment would declare abortion a “guaranteed freedom” overseen by Parliament’s laws. The impulse for the change was the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022. But it also reflects the widespread support for abortion in France, built over years, and a successful campaign by a coalition of feminist activists and lawmakers.

Paris CNN —France became the world’s first country to enshrine abortion rights in its constitution on Monday, the culmination of an effort that began in direct response to the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The amendment states that there is a “guaranteed freedom” to abortion in France. While abortion is a highly divisive issue in US politics that often falls along party lines, in France it is widely supported. The measure’s passage is a clear victory for the French left, which has been pushing for years to guarantee abortion rights in the constitution. The vote marks the 25th time the French government has amended its constitution since the founding of the Fifth Republic in 1958.

PARIS (Reuters) - France announced a second batch of ministerial nominations on Thursday, with embattled Amelie Oudea-Castera stepping down as Education Minister and being replaced by former justice minister Nicole Belloubet. Oudea-Castera, a former high-flying tennis player, retains her role as Sports and Olympic Games Minister, the French Presidency said. Belloubet was justice minister from June 2017 until July 2020, when she was replaced by Eric Dupond-Moretti. She initially said she had taken her children off state schools to place them in a private Catholic institution because the state school had too often failed to replace missing teachers. The nominations come after Macron reshuffled his government in January.

Even in France, where political corruption cases abound, it was a sight to behold: the country’s justice minister standing alone before two rows of judges in an ancient, wood-paneled courtroom to defend himself over accusations about his own use — or abuse — of power. Not, he said with flourish, “with foam on my lips,” hoping to take revenge. The case is the first time a sitting minister has faced trial in France, and if he is found guilty, it will prove a blow to President Emmanuel Macron, who rose to power on a promise to tighten ethical standards in French politics. But what makes it even more exceptional is that, as justice minister, Mr. Dupond-Moretti is being tried in the system he continues to oversee. Many of the more than 20 witnesses on the docket to testify over the 10-day trial, which opened on Monday, are sitting judges or top legal officials who in theory, should ultimately answer to him.

Leftwing politicians have branded the fundraiser as shameful while the far right has defended a police force it says is a daily target for violence in the low-income suburbs that ring French cities. It is a debate that reflects the deep fractures running through French society. "This police officer is the victim of a national witch-hunt and it is a disgrace," Messiha tweeted soon after launching the campaign. "You are perpetuating an already yawning rift by supporting a police officer under investigation for voluntary homicide. And what does it tell us about French politics? “Currently, this fund complies with our terms of use because the funds will be paid directly to the family in question. Le Pen also tempered her rhetoric in response to this crisis, in what Marliere said was an attempt to appeal to more middle-of-the-road voters. While Zemmour called the rioters “scum” and called for some of their requests for French nationality to be refused, Le Pen spoke more sympathetically about the victim. “The Meloni strategy is very much what Le Pen is trying to follow in France,” Marliere said.

Paris, France CNN —Fires raged across protest sites in France and nearly 1,000 people were detained as violent demonstrations over the killing of a 17-year-old shot by police entered a fourth night. France’s Interior Ministry said Saturday 994 people had been detained following the fourth night of violence. Seventy-nine police and gendarmes were injured over Friday night and there had been 58 attacks on police and gendarme stations, it added. “I was born French, but the police don’t see that,” he said. Éric Dupond-Moretti, the justice minister, declared that “those who spit on the police and on justice are the moral accomplices” of the acts of violence committed. The deadly confrontation started when Nahel ran a red light to avoid a first stop, the prosecutor said, and the officers approached the vehicle once it got stuck in traffic. But it resonated with police unions, which have accused politicians of ignoring the risks officers face in the field. Those unions have long argued that their job has become increasingly dangerous because of the government’s failure to address deep-seated social problems.

PARIS — The killing of a 12-year-old girl whose body was found inside a plastic trunk has left France “profoundly shaken” and led to accusations that far-right lawmakers have politicized her death to attack the government's immigration policies. ET) on Friday, the Paris state prosecutor said in a statement Monday. A 43-year-old man is also in custody, charged with helping to hide the girl’s body, according to a prosecutors’ statement. Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti told the National Assembly on Tuesday that the arrested woman was given an order to leave France on Aug. 22. Far-right politicians have since lashed out at French President Emmanuel Macron's centrist government and blamed its immigration policies for the girl’s death.
